What is a loft? (History)

Dating back to the early1900's, original lofts were located in central warehouses and used for manufacturing plants or for storage spaces in the city's urban core.  As the 60's approached, loft living started to materialize and became the "chic" way to live in such places as the SoHo district of New York City.  These exceptional warehouses in SoHo had high ceilings, exposed duct work, and solid brick walls.  The vast open spaces within the loft created a perfect work environment for many of the different artisans of New York City!

Fast forward to 2007, lofts have now become a not only a popular choice for artisans, but emerging urban professionals of all kinds who want and crave an urban lifestyle.  While working in a loft can be cozy and comfortable, being steps away from all the action of a major metro area is a choice that many of us now demand!

Many new loft projects with a contemporary, modern flair have been built to add to the many traditional warehouse buildings that have been the staple of loft living.  One now has plenty of choices to make when looking at what style and type of loft that best suites one's needs and wants.  Whether its a traditional warehouse open space loft or one of new modern lofts complete with the amenities you would expect in a 5 star hotel, there is a style to suit all tastes in the urban core of Minneapolis and St Paul!
